COMPASS is a fantastic database that Mount Ridley uses to record information about our students, Merits, Cautions, parent correspondence, incidences and follow-up consequences.

Here are a few tips to get you started.

Logging an incident:

Step One: Log into COMPASS to record incidents in order to track behaviours in the yard and in the classroom.

Step Two: Search for the student who has been involved in the incident.

Step Three: Select ‘add chronicle’ and complete the relevant tabs. Add any involved students by looking them up in the search tab.

Step Four: Under the involved students’ name/s, click on the ‘involved’ hyperlink and indicate if they are a perpetrator, victim, witness or involved

Step Five: Ensure the log is detailed, factual and does not contain emotional language.

Who (use full first names of students and full staff name)
What (avoid using emotional language and keep to the facts)
When (consider the lead up to the incident as well)
Where (be specific in locations)
How (record student statements and be precise with the language used)

Step Six: Indicate whether this incident requires ‘follow up’ from the management team by clicking ‘yes or no’.

Step Seven: If there is no follow up needed from the management team, you need to log the follow up that you will undertake or have undertaken from the ‘follow up details’ tab. For example, you may wish to speak to the parents and therefore you can log the follow up as ‘parent correspondence’.

Step Eight: Parent correspondence related to the incident should be logged separately. This must be appended to the initial log. This means that all related information is grouped together.

Step Nine: If you feel a colleague needs to be notified of the incident please add them to the notification chain and click ‘notify only’. This will send an email to the staff you have listed so they know of the incident.

Step Ten: Save the log
